3 - Evaluation of heavy metals contamination in craft beer production

The quantity of heavy metals contamination in craft beer production was evaluated. The aim of the work was to acquire better knowledge about this production, which has been largely spreading over past years. For the evaluation three micro-breweries of Friuli-Venezia Giulia were considered. Samples were taken during the whole production process i.e. raw materials, intermediate products, production by-products and finished beer. Also 30 commercial beers were analyzed, to highlight differences between craft and industrial beer production. The analysis was carried out by ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry) following official methods. Obtained results highlighted that craft beer production has low levels of heavy metals contamination, comparable to industrial beer production.
